FROM YOUR ADMINISTRATOR

November is one of my favorite months. Eric and I got to go on a fall getaway to Maine. We spent time exploring Acadia National Park. I was stunned by the scenery of the wild coast with its rocky outcroppings being pounded by the fridged waters creating a view of God’s grandeur.  The fall foliage was at its color peak and the weather was beautiful.  Being in nature always draws me closer to our wonderful architect creator of it all. It was a great time to step away from the rhythm of work and enter rest.  We set aside the norm for just a bit and stepped into an adventure that drew us close to our maker.  Psalms 148 is all about Praising the Lord. It is hard to see the beauty of creation and not Praise.

It was exciting to come back home and realize I get to experience fall in all its color again.  I won’t be able to step away so completely, but I can take moments and short breaks to breathe in creation all around.  I want to encourage you to take a bit of time to get out in nature and practice maybe a new rhythm of rest. Take a moment by yourself and with your family to pause, see and appreciate the divine creation all around. Spend time Praising the Lord for all creation.

Fall is a wonderful time of year! Praise the Lord! (Psalms 148)

Newsletter_Things You Need to Know Now

The office will be closed the following dates:

Nov. 26, 28 and Dec. 24, 26, 31, Jan. 2.  Reopen Tuesday, January 7.

You can always send us an email if you need us. We tend to check and answer emails even when the office is closed. It may be a bit slower, but you will hear back.

1st Quarter Grades Are Due Now

This is very important for everyone. By this time there will have been 10 weeks to get your first quarter work completed. Typically, a quarter is 8 to 9 weeks, so this is ample time. Once you submit your grades, we have work we do on our end. If there is a valid reason your grades will be late, let us know in the office.

Things to remember when submitting grades online:

  • Pay close attention to what is being asked and answer accordingly. For example, when it asks for Your Name, we are assuming the adult is filling this out, so it is the parent’s name, not the student. Student’s name will be asked for as well.
  • Remember to select the correct quarter and enter the beginning and ending dates.
  • When it says to “Choose One”, please select one of the options. “Not Covered This Quarter” is one of the options if you did not cover that subject.
  • Once you submit, you will receive an email. Open the email and either digitally save or print and file the pdf of your student’s grades. You will need these at the end of the year to fill out the End of Year Forms.

New Family Registration will open Mid-Year

New Family Registration will open December 1st and will close on December 18th! All personal family interviews must take place on or before December 19th.

Important Dual Enrollment Information

If you have a student taking Dual Enrollment, you will need to report those grades on your quarterly submission. We understand you will not have a grade when you turn in the first quarter, but you still need to report what course your student is taking. In the comment section on the grade submission report, put that it is a Dual Enrollment course, and that you will give the grade at the end of the semester…either quarter 2 or quarter 4. Then in May/June, when you turn in your End of the Year form, make sure you have the Dual Enrollment course/s listed with the credit earned.

ACT TESTING

If your student takes the ACT test WITH WRITING, please let us know in the office. When the writing portion is taken, the test scores come back MUCH LATER than the normal scoring. We do not know to be looking for it and it is easily missed. If you let us know when they are taking it, then we will be able to keep looking until it comes in.

Senior Day

Friday, February 7, 2025
8:30 a.m. – noon
CPC- Sanctuary

Graduation will be at First Baptist Church in Trussville, and we should know the actual graduation date by the February 7th meeting. They do not start scheduling until January, and they fill the slots their ministries need first.

This is a mandatory meeting for all seniors and at least one parent.

Balfour representative will be there to take orders for caps & gowns, graduation announcements, and other senior stuff. We’ll discuss other topics pertinent to graduation and life afterwards (like soft skills). We will also be taking a group photo!

Leslie Howard will be scheduling tux and drape pictures if you want to have them made in the afternoon. This is optional for our Crossroads families.  Leslie is a professional photographer and was a CRCS mom for many years.

There is a $20 sitting fee that is due that day.  Call Leslie at (205) 706-4623 to make this appointment.

If your student does not plan to walk and participate in graduation, we need you to contact us and let us know ASAP.

Details will be sent in an email to all senior families closer to the meeting time.

HOMESCHOOLING 101

7 p.m.
Community Presbyterian Church in Moody in the back education building.

This FREE seminar is for anyone interested in information about homeschooling, getting started, picking curricula, Alabama state laws, etc. It will last about 1-1/2 hours. Attending this seminar does not obligate you to homeschool or to join Crossroads. This is simply our way of getting out information to the community about homeschooling.

Our school’s New Family registration will open December 1st and close December 18th, 2024 for midyear registration. We will open again in May for registration for next school year.

If you are coming, please respond to the school office (by email or by phone) and let us know.

Welcome to AllPencilsDown

ACT – SAT Prep

AllPencilsDown has spent over 20 years developing and teaching courses to help students improve their ACT and SAT test scores. They had a table set up at the August faculty meeting and had an incredible offer for the first 15 Crossroads students who sign up for their course.  They have extended that offer. It is a $100 discount on courses through December.

Here are the stipulations:

  1. It’s for the first 15 Crossroads students who register.
  2. It applies to a live course, foundations or advanced.
  3. You will need to show proof of enrollment at Crossroads. (Student ID card or CSEF)

Kim Brittle is the only one who can register students for the classes and her number is 205-989-4356 or you can email her at kim@allpencilsdown.com.

“We used AllPencilsDown for several of our students and it helped them raise their ACT score. Check out their website and read the reviews.  It was very helpful for our family.” (Jenny Bartz)

“I graduated from Crossroads in 2015. I did the AllPencilsDown ACT prep and raised my score 5 points. It enabled me to go to UAH on a scholarship!” (Tymon Sharp)

Well, inflation has caught up to the yearbook.  The price went up on us. The cost this year is $45 per book.  Remember that you must pre-order to secure one.  At times we have extra to sell but this past year we only had three extra.   You can order them on Cheddar Up under the collection Yearbook- T-Shirts- Choirs and Plays.

Ads in our yearbook help us each year so consider putting an ad in our yearbook. Contact Jenny Bartz or Trenity Whitfield.

PICTURES PLEASE!

Our yearbook staff takes the pictures you give us during the year to make a wonderful keepsake to capture many memoirs of the school year.  The staff works all year long learning and then creating.

We need your help to make this happen. Help us by staying on top of your photos and submitting them quickly so the staff can “do their thing.”  As your student participates in field trips, dances, home activities, individual arts or sports…take photos.  Pick the best of the best.  PLEASE do not upload your whole stash of photos on the event.  Just pick a few.   Submit within 2 weeks of the event.  The students will know they have photos they can work with to create the pages.

Go to the website and find the link under the Media/Yearbook tab.

Newsletter_CRCS Activities

ACTIVITIES @ CRCS!!!

The semester is rolling along nicely with the Activities Team in full swing, bringing you and your students an exceptional variety of field trips and events.

We relayed some important information at the October faculty meetings, which is repeated here for your convenience and awareness.

  1. Parents, ensure that your students are where they are supposed to be and not where they are not supposed to be.
  2. Paying by credit card or e-check is the easiest way to make sure that your payment is made in a timely fashion. If you choose to pay by cash/check, make sure that the school office receives your funds to the office no later than two weeks (in most cases) PRIOR to the date of the first item in your Cheddar Up order. The entire balance of the order is due at the same time.
  3. To avoid paying a large amount at once, distribute your Cheddar Up items across several orders.
  4. Choosing the cash/check payment option assumes payment will be made and attendance will take place. Please do not take someone else’s spot.
  5. Failure to pay on time will result in forfeiture of participation.
  6. Late registrations will no longer be accepted. Please watch the deadlines.

If you have any questions or need additional information, please do not hesitate to contact us via email, text, or phone. We are here for you, and we absolutely love doing what we do for the Crossroads Family.

Note the following guidelines/suggestions as you study the available activities and register via Cheddar Up.

  1. Find what activities fit your family.
  2. Follow the age and grade stipulations. Failure to do so may result in forfeiture of your payment.
  3. Read all the notes on Cheddar Up. Some field trips require certain attire, a signed waiver, etc.
  4. Know that the Crossroads dress and behavior guidelines, as noted in the school handbook, also apply to field trips. Parents/guardians are responsible for their own children.
  5. Please know that we endeavor to locate enriching, educational, and enjoyable activities. However, we cannot always know from which perspective or philosophical background a topic may be presented. We encourage you to always discuss with your students what they have “learned.”
  6. Our preferred method of payment on Cheddar Up is e-check or credit card. However, if you choose to pay the school office by cash/check, you still must register via Cheddar Up. Payment is expected no later than two weeks prior to an event.
  7. Remember that fees will be added to each transaction as explained on Cheddar Up.
  8. Register by set deadlines.
  9. Cheddar Up purchases for activities and field trips are not transferable to other persons.

Tis the Season to Be Thankful, But…

by Catherine Segars

The best-laid plans of mice and men oft’ go awry… and leave us nothing but grief and pain, for promised joy!” (Excerpt from “To a Mouse” by Robert Burns)

My husband got a new job about six months ago. It paid a good bit less than his previous job, but there was a tentative plan in place to advance him quickly. Within the year, we would be ahead financially from where we were. A huge need would be met. A prayer answered.

But then his general manager retired and was replaced. And last week, his direct boss put in his notice. And the path forward leading to that financially secure future disappeared like a distant mirage that faded the closer we got.

I have been tempted with frustration and discouragement and even anger. The future we expected no longer exists as the expenses of our large family grow. How much longer can we sustain this?

But I was reading in Ephesians 5 this morning and found a curious directive, a strange antidote to the vices of this world. Verse 3 says,

“But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God’s holy people. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk, or course joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.”

That is quite a list of sins.

What is the remedy? What should our focus be rather than all of these worldly things?

Gratitude.

Not the answer you would expect.

A grateful heart goes a long way in God’s kingdom. It puts our focus where it should be, which is not on our bank accounts or the carefully made plans that fell through leaving “pain… for promised joy.” Gratitude is the foundation that keeps our heart focused on God, on His goodness and His provision. And when our focus is there, we can’t be greedy. And our hearts are protected from these other seemingly unrelated sins. After all, many of these vices materialize when we try to fulfill our desires outside of what He has already provided, what we should be grateful for right now.

There’s a reason why God hates grumbling and complaining—it puts our focus on the wrong things and corrupts our outlook… and our future.

An attitude of gratitude should be our response in good news and in bad.

An attitude of gratitude can protect us from obscene and foolish talk.

An attitude of gratitude will guard our hearts from greed and other impurities.

What is that fear gnawing at your mind right now… that thing the enemy keeps taunting you with… that thing that keeps you up at night?

Combat it with some gratitude. Make a list of the things you have to be grateful for. Write them down. Put them on your bathroom mirror or on the refrigerator. Speak them often and think about them even more. Practice gratitude, and the fear will go away. So will greed and foolish talk and other impurities. Build your life on a foundation of gratitude, and good things will grow.

“Give thanks in all circumstances for this is God’s will for you in Christian Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18

Sr High Play – Fiddler on the Roof Jr

10th – 12th Grade Musical

Karen Cunningham – Director

“Fiddler on the Roof Jr” is for 10th through 12th grade students. We will have two music practices before Christmas on Dec 6th from 1:00 – 3:00, and Dec 13th 1:30-3:30.  Practices will continue at 2:30-4:45 on Fridays starting in January, with additional Saturday practices on Jan 11, Feb 22 and March 1.  Please be sure you are available for all of Tech/Performance week before you audition! As always, we will attempt to work around your conflicts such as basketball, but it may affect the size role you are able to accept.  Tech week with required attendance will be March 3-6, with Performances March 7 & 8 at CEPA in Pell City.

Auditions – Mon/Tues, Nov 18th/19th, 3:30 – 5:45 (just come to your slot), with Callbacks on Wed Nov 20th from 3:00-5:00. Audition slots using SignUp Genius will open November 1st (link below), and you will need to sign up on Cheddar Up to pay the student fee as well. Preparation for auditions will include singing a portion of a song of your choice (you may certainly do one from the play if you wish), and reading from “slides” that will be provided when you fill out the SignUp Genius registration.  Also, the Non-Speaking role of the Fiddler will need to be played by someone comfortable with exaggerated pantomime or even dance and/or I may choose to use a real “fiddler,” so those wanting to play the violin will find sheet music on the links with the audition Sign Up.  This is a great opportunity for someone normally not comfortable with singing or speaking on stage as long as they can be expressive.  There is a special form for those wanting to try for this role that will be emailed.

There is a short, but mandatory, informational video message that ALL PARENTS and STUDENTS need to watch BEFORE signing up for an audition slot to help you determine if this is an activity you can participate in this year.

Meet in the gym at noon for fellowship as we have lunch together. Then we will transition into a time of study and prayer. It is a great time to connect with others, learn and lift each other up in prayer.

CRCS will facilitate the lunch. To do that, we need help. There will be a FB event with the menu and parents will sign up to bring food. That is usually posted the week before each event. We also will need volunteers to help with the set-up, serving of the food, and clean up. If you can volunteer, please contact the office or reply on the FB post when it is created. We can NOT do it without you.

KEY CLUB NEWS!

Well, October found us busy with leadership development and fundraising. We heard from our Division 7 Lieutenant Governor, Casen Cambron, and from members who served at Moody’s Oktoberfest. Our own officers led workshops on communication (specifically, microphone techniques), time management, and conflict resolution from a Christian perspective.

We held a quick fundraiser with the “Cup Game” and raised $48 for The Thirst Project, an international organization that brings clean water to communities around the globe. A few members helped with concessions at the East Central Patriots football games, many assisted Mrs. Mary Beth with dance set-up, and Briley Brasher won the t-shirt design contest for the second year in a row. Way to go and congratulations!

Our next meeting is November 8th. We encourage members to participate not only in meetings but also in service projects that take place off campus and at various times and locations. Service to others benefits both the receiver and the giver. As you serve, log your hours, and submit them regularly to Marissa, our Key Club Secretary.

And, as always, the best way to know what is happening with YOUR student-led Key Club is to attend the meetings, ask questions, and participate. Students, this really is your club!

Find us on Facebook at CRCS Key Club and Instagram at crossroads_key_club.

4-H Club

Tuesday, December 3, 2024 at 1 pm.  Due to a schedule conflict for Alayna, we will skip November and use the December make-up date.

4-H programs are grounded in the belief that kids learn best by doing. Involvement in 4-H includes hands-on projects in areas like science, health, agriculture and civic engagement, all in a positive environment where they receive guidance from adult mentors and are encouraged to take on proactive leadership roles. Kids can concentrate on one focus area or they can try a variety of programs throughout their 4-H experience. Regardless of the project area, all 4-H programs include mentoring and career readiness as core elements. This year, our club will cover mammals, financial literacy, communication, and team building! For more information, contact Alayna Jackson, 4-H Agent and check out our Facebook page.

Robotics

Do you enjoy building, coding, or expressing your creativity in unique ways? If you’re in 6th-12th grade, our robotics team is looking for you! We need all kinds of talent, from future engineers and programmers to artists, actors, and marketers to help showcase our robot. Whether you want to design an exhibit booth or help with a creative commercial, there’s a place for you on the team. This year, the BEST Robotics challenge is heading to the moon with a robot designed to navigate terrain and collect moon rocks. Join us at Mt. Calvary Presbyterian Church in Clay on Tuesdays and Thursdays (6-8 PM) and Saturdays (8:30 AM-12:30 PM). If you have any questions, contact Eric Jackson at ericjacksonbbq@gmail.com or Leigh McKibben at leigh@mediamerge.com.

Contact Information:

Feel free to contact us at the email addresses below, depending on the concern.

Office: office@crossroadschristian.us (General Communications)

Records: records@crossroadschristian.us (Records, Grades, Transcripts, etc.)

Accounting: accounting@crossroadschristian.us (Financial)

OFFICE HOURS: Crossroads office has regular office hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays 9 am to 3 pm. Call and leave a message, and we’ll return your phone call. E-mail is always a good way to get in touch with us, almost any time!

TUITION: All Crossroads families will receive a monthly email reminder (through QuickBooks Online) on the last day of each month about next month’s tuition. It is due by the 15th of each month. There is a link through the QuickBooks e-mail to pay tuition from your bank to the Crossroads bank and you can pay for more than one month at a time. School year 2024-25 began on June 1, 2024 for Returning Families. Tuition for New Families who joined over the summer begins in August. You always have the option of paying by cash or check at faculty meetings or in the office. And you can mail checks also. We do not accept credit cards. If you believe there is a discrepancy, please contact the office so we can verify. If you are not receiving the QuickBooks e-mail, please let us know that also.

TRANSCRIPT REQUESTS: If you need a transcript for any reason, the first step is to go to our website, and under records, fill out the transcript request form. Lori Booth, our registrar, will send your transcript where you have requested. She will also contact you if she has any questions. Feel free to contact her with any questions you may have as well. If we have to prepare a transcript from scratch, it may take up to two weeks to produce it, depending on work volume. So don’t wait until the last minute to make that transcript request, and remember we need your up-to-date records before we can do it!

WORK PERMITS: Under the current state law, work permits are no longer required for your teenager. If a 14YO or 15YO is working, he or she must provide an Eligibility to Work form to employers, which can be obtained from the Crossroads office. Students 16 years or older do not need anything from the school. For more information, check the Child Labor Law .

DRIVERS PERMIT and DRIVERS LICENSE: If your student plans to take the driver’s permit or driver’s license test, the student must provide proof of school enrollment. Contact the school office for a ALEA form 1-93 enrollment/exclusion form. Or, call and request that we mail it to you. These forms will also be available at faculty meetings.
